Good carnival campaign ideas let people join the party from their phone: a costume photo competition, a "flip the pancake" skill game for Pancake Day, a vote on the best topping or a mask-themed mystery box. Carnival moves with Easter, so check the date each year. In 2027, Shrove Tuesday (Pancake Day, Mardi Gras) falls on 9 February, and the main carnival days in Brazil, Venice and the Rhineland lead up to it.
Carnival is one festival with many local faces. In Brazil it fills the streets for days. In Venice it means masks. In Cologne it starts in November and peaks in February. In Denmark children dress up for Fastelavn, and in the UK most people simply eat pancakes. For a brand, that variety is useful: you can pick the version your customers know and build a short, playful campaign around it. This guide covers the dates, how each tradition works for marketing, ten campaign ideas with formats and prizes, and what to measure.
When is Carnival 2027?
Most carnival dates are counted back from Easter Sunday. Easter 2027 is on 28 March, so the carnival week falls in early February. Shrove Tuesday is always 47 days before Easter, which means it can land anywhere between 3 February and 9 March.

In Brazil, the main samba school parades in Rio de Janeiro run from Sunday to Tuesday, 7 to 9 February 2027, according to the Rio Carnival schedule. Venice Carnival ends on Shrove Tuesday, 9 February 2027, with events in the days and weeks before. Basel is the exception: its Fasnacht starts on the Monday after Ash Wednesday, on 15 February 2027.
Notting Hill Carnival in London is not linked to Easter at all. It takes place over the late August bank holiday weekend, so plan it with your summer campaigns. You can see the right dates for your country in the free marketing calendar.
Carnival around the world, and how brands use it
Carnaval in Brazil
Brazil's Carnaval is one of the biggest street festivals in the world. It runs from the Friday before Ash Wednesday, with samba school parades in Rio's Sambadrome, street parties (blocos) in every major city and huge crowds in Salvador and Recife. Brands take part by sponsoring blocos and parades, launching themed products and running social campaigns during the week. For international brands with Brazilian customers, it is a reason to speak to them in their own language and season, not just at Christmas.
Venice and the mask tradition
Venice Carnival is known for masks and costumes rather than parades. That visual theme works well for fashion, beauty, travel and food brands, even far from Italy: think mask reveals, "guess who's behind the mask" and elegant, after-dark campaign designs.
Cologne and the Rhineland
In Cologne, Düsseldorf and Mainz, the carnival season officially opens on 11 November at 11:11 and peaks between Weiberfastnacht and Ash Wednesday. Local retailers, bakeries, drinks brands and hospitality businesses see it as one of the busiest weeks of the year. Costumes, parades and "Kamelle" (sweets thrown from the floats) are the shared language.
Fastelavn in Denmark
Fastelavn is a family occasion. Children dress up and hit a barrel to win the title of cat king or cat queen, and bakeries sell cream buns (fastelavnsboller) for weeks before. It suits bakeries, supermarkets, toy and costume shops, cafés and family attractions.
Shrove Tuesday and Pancake Day in the UK
In the UK and Ireland, Shrove Tuesday is Pancake Day. It is less about costumes and more about food, families and fun. Supermarkets, food and drink brands, cafés and kitchenware shops can build a campaign around recipes, toppings and pancake races.
Notting Hill Carnival
London's Notting Hill Carnival celebrates Caribbean culture with music, costumes and food over the August bank holiday weekend. If you mark it, involve the community, focus on the culture and avoid using it only as a backdrop for discounts.

10 carnival campaign ideas
1. Costume photo competition
Ask people to upload a photo of their costume, then let the public vote. A photo competition works for Fastelavn, Karneval and Brazilian Carnaval alike. Moderate uploads before they go live, and ask for consent for both the photo and marketing.
2. Flip the pancake
The classic Pancake Day marketing idea, made digital. A skill game like tap it or drop game, themed as flipping or catching pancakes, with a leaderboard and a prize for the best scores. It is quick, works on a phone and invites people to play again.
3. Vote for the best topping
Lemon and sugar or chocolate? Cream or jam in the bun? A product battle or vote game is a fun way to learn what your customers like, and the result makes a good social post. Send voters a recipe or discount by email if they opted in.
4. Hit the barrel
For Danish audiences, smash it turns the Fastelavn barrel into a game. Whoever breaks it wins a prize, and the top score of the day is your "cat king" or "cat queen". Use it in a webshop popup or on a QR code in the bakery.
5. Behind the mask
A mystery box or gift surprise with a Venice-style mask design. Players pick a mask, and behind it is a prize: a discount, free shipping or a bigger gift. The reveal fits the theme perfectly.
6. The carnival quiz
How much do people know about carnival around the world? A quiz with questions about Rio, Venice, Cologne and your own products suits travel, drinks and food brands. Combine it with a prize draw for a bigger prize. Read more in our guide to lead generation quizzes.
7. Which costume are you?
A personality test for costume, fashion and beauty retailers: four questions, one costume result and products to complete the look. The answers tell you what to recommend next season.
8. Scratch card on the bakery box
Print a QR code on cake boxes, bags or receipts during carnival week. Customers scan, play a scratch card and win something to use on their next visit. Make the codes with the free QR code generator, and read about QR codes in store.
9. A carnival countdown calendar
A campaign calendar with one door per day from Weiberfastnacht to Shrove Tuesday, or from Friday to Ash Wednesday for Brazilian audiences, gives people a reason to come back each day. In the Rhineland you could even start on 11 November.
10. From carnival to Easter
Ash Wednesday starts Lent, and Easter is about six weeks away. Close your carnival campaign with a short survey and invite players to your Easter campaign. Easter campaigns don't need months of work: Dansk Outlet built a last-minute Easter scratch card that got 13,000 sign-ups from 16,000 visitors. Our guide to Easter gamification marketing has more ideas.
Prize ideas
Keep prizes on theme: costumes, a year of pancakes or buns, a baking set, tickets to a carnival event, a trip, or a product bundle. Mix a few big prizes with many small ones, such as a discount code or free shipping. Set the number of prizes and the odds with the free prize odds calculator, and see how Scratcher handles prizes and winners.
Sign-ups, consent and local rules
Ask only for what you need, add a consent checkbox that isn't ticked in advance, and say what people will receive. The free consent text generator and the competition terms generator help you get started, and our guide on how to run an online competition covers the rest.
Carnival often involves alcohol and children, so take care. If you sell or give away alcohol, or link a competition to a purchase, check the local rules for each country first. Fastelavn campaigns often reach children, so make sure the person who signs up and gives consent is old enough, or address parents directly.
What to measure
| Metric | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| Participants and sign-ups | Reach and list growth |
| Consent rate | How many you can contact after carnival |
| Votes and answers | What your audience likes |
| Shares and uploads | How social the campaign became |
| Codes redeemed | Visits and sales during carnival week |
