# Ask for consent and add terms and conditions

Add consent checkboxes for newsletters, link your terms, choose which checkbox subscribes people and send only people who said yes to your email tool.

To send marketing to the people who sign up, you need their consent. In Scratcher, consent is given with checkboxes in the form. Scratcher stores each person's answer with the exact text, the time and the IP address, so you can document it.

## Add a consent checkbox

1. Click the checkboxes in the form, or add a **Checkbox** element inside the form. The panel is called **Checkboxes**.
2. Write the consent text directly on the page, for example "Yes, I would like to receive offers and news from Brand by email. I can unsubscribe at any time."
3. Under **Permissions**, click **Add permission** to add more checkboxes, for example one for email and one for SMS.
4. Open a permission and choose whether it is **Required**. For a required checkbox, write the **Error message** people see if they don't tick it. Consent to marketing should normally be optional, while accepting the terms of the competition can be required.
5. To link words in the checkbox text to your terms, select the words and click **Term link** in the text toolbar. Choose a terms page or **New term**. **Remove term link** takes the link off.

## Manage the checkboxes

- **Rename**: double-click a permission's name under **Permissions**. The name is what you see when you filter integrations and in the lead's consent history.
- **Reorder**: click **Reorder**, drag the permissions by the handle, and click **Done reordering**.
- **Remove**: open the permission and click **Remove permission**. The last permission can't be removed on its own; remove the whole element instead.

## Style the checkboxes

On the **Styles** tab: **Font**, **Border**, the colors of the **Checkbox**, the **Checkmark** and the **Error**, **Size**, **Shape** and **Vertical alignment** (how the box lines up with a long text).

## Choose which checkbox subscribes people

By default, everyone who signs up is subscribed to the emails you send from Scratcher. To subscribe only people who tick a checkbox:

1. On the **Styles** tab of the checkboxes, open **Checkboxes add-ons** and turn on **Subscribe permission**.
2. Under **Subscribe permission (leave empty to always subscribe)**, choose the checkbox.

## Link your terms and conditions

Every competition should have terms that explain who can take part, the prizes, how winners are found and how you use the data.

1. Under the form page in the flow, click **Add terms and conditions**.
2. Write your terms on the new page.
3. Link to the page from the checkbox text with **Term link**.

## Only send people who said yes

When you connect an integration, use **Filter by permissions (optional)** and select your marketing checkbox. Only people who ticked it are sent to your email tool. See [How integrations work](https://scratcher.io/help/integrations/how-integrations-work).

## See a person's consent

Open a lead and go to the **GDPR** tab to see **Accepted permissions**: which texts the person accepted, and when.

## Check before launch

The health check tells you if the consent checkbox is set up, if the consent text has been changed from the template, and if the terms page is linked.
