# Limit how often people can play

Let people play once, daily, weekly or without limit, cap the number of participants and change the messages they see.

You decide how often each person can take part. Open **Settings** > **Participation** in the editor.

## Participation limit

Choose the **Participation limit**:

- **Once**: each person can take part one time.
- **Daily**, **Weekly** or **Monthly**: people can take part again each day, week or month. Set the **Number of times you can participate per day** (or week or month), and for weekly and monthly limits the day it resets.
- **Infinite**: no limit.

Days follow the campaign's time zone, which you set in **Settings** > **Localization**.

A person is recognised by the form's unique field, usually the email address. So limits only work when the campaign has a form with an email or phone field. See [Hidden fields, prefilled forms and the unique field](https://scratcher.io/help/forms/hidden-fields-and-prefill).

## More options

- **Limit participation across languages**: one limit across all language versions of the campaign.
- **Limit max participants**: close the campaign when a number of people have taken part, and choose the **Page shown after hitting max**.
- **Login**: let people log in to continue where they left off.
- **Auto-complete form**: fill in the form for returning players.
- **Custom error messages**: change the texts people see, for example when they have already taken part.

## Limiting prizes, not plays

If people can play many times but should only win once, use **Only allow winning once** or the prize's **Win once** add-on. See [Set the win chance and prize limits](https://scratcher.io/help/prizes/win-chance-and-limits).

## The participation panel at a glance

- **Day of week to reset** (for weekly limits) and **Day of month to reset** (for monthly limits).
- **Limit max participants**: set the **Max number of participants**.
- **Custom error messages**: edit the messages, and click **Edit popup messages element** to change how the message popup looks.
