You connect Scratcher to Intercom through Zapier. A Zap takes every new lead from your Scratcher campaign and creates or updates a contact in Intercom, so your support and sales teams can see who took part.
What you need
- A Zapier account. A Zap with a tag or filter step needs a paid Zapier plan.
- An Intercom teammate login with permission to manage contacts (people), and permission to install apps in the workspace. Admins have both.
- A Scratcher plan with integrations, and a campaign with at least one lead to test with.
Step 1: Connect Scratcher to Zapier
If you haven't done it yet, follow Connect 8,000+ apps with Zapier: in Scratcher go to Settings > Integrations > Zapier and click Set up on Zapier.
Step 2: Set up the trigger
- In Zapier, click Create and choose Zaps.
- As the trigger, choose Scratcher and the trigger for new leads.
- Connect your Scratcher account, choose the campaign and click Test trigger.
Step 3: Add the Intercom action
- Add the action step and choose Intercom.
- As the action event, choose the one that creates or updates a contact (user or lead).
- Connect your account: log in to Intercom, choose the workspace and click to authorize Zapier.
- Choose the role: Lead for people who aren't customers yet, or User for people who have an account with you.
Step 4: Map the fields
- Email: the lead's email. Intercom uses it to find an existing contact.
- Name: first and last name.
- Phone: the phone number with + and country code.
- Custom attributes: for example the campaign name or a quiz answer. Create the attributes in Intercom first (under the data settings for people).
- Unsubscribed from emails: set it to true for people who didn't give marketing consent, if you don't filter them out.
Step 5: Tag contacts (optional)
Add one more action step with Intercom's action for tagging a contact. Use the contact from the step before and a tag such as "Scratcher summer game". Tags make it easy to find the contacts or start a series in Intercom.
Step 6: Test and publish
- Click Test step, and check the contact in Intercom. Delete it afterwards.
- Click Publish to turn the Zap on.
Only send people who said yes
Add a Filter by Zapier step after the trigger, choose your marketing permission from Scratcher and set it to "(Boolean) Is true". See Consent and permissions.
Troubleshooting
- Look at the Zap history in Zapier for each run and Intercom's error message.
- "Forbidden" or missing permissions: the Intercom teammate who connected Zapier can't manage contacts. Reconnect with an admin.
- Duplicates: a lead and a user with the same email can both exist in Intercom. Choose one role for all contacts from Scratcher.
