With the Mailchimp integration, everyone who signs up is added to a Mailchimp audience. If they are already in the audience, their merge fields are updated.
What you need
- A Mailchimp account with at least one audience. All Mailchimp plans work, including the free plan.
- A Mailchimp login with admin access to the account, so Scratcher can see all your audiences.
You don't need an API key. You log in to Mailchimp and allow the access.
Step 1: Connect Mailchimp
- In Scratcher, go to Settings > Integrations and click MailChimp.
- Click Install integration. You are sent to Mailchimp.
- Log in to Mailchimp and click Allow to let Scratcher connect.
- You come back to Scratcher, and Mailchimp is installed.
Mailchimp gives Scratcher access to your account through its own login, so there are no permissions to choose. Scratcher only reads your audiences and merge fields and adds or updates members.
Step 2: Turn it on in a campaign
- In the editor, go to Connect > Integrations > MailChimp and click Activate.
- If you have connected more than one Mailchimp account, choose it under Select account.
- Under External list, choose the audience.
- Under Field mappings, match your fields to the audience's merge fields. For example "Lead - First name" to First Name (FNAME) and "Lead - Last name" to Last Name (LNAME).
- Under Filter by permissions (optional), choose your marketing consent checkbox.
- Click Save, and then Test.
Field mapping
- The email address is always sent. Everything else must be mapped.
- The Destination field list shows the merge fields of the audience you chose. Create the merge field in Mailchimp first (in the audience, under Settings > Audience fields and merge tags) if it is missing, and open the integration again.
- If a merge field is required in Mailchimp, you must map it, or Mailchimp rejects the sign-up.
- For a phone merge field, use the Format setting to send the number the way Mailchimp expects.
Consent
New people are added to the audience as Subscribed. People who are already in the audience keep their status, so someone who unsubscribed earlier is not subscribed again.
Because new people are subscribed right away, only send people who gave consent: choose your marketing checkbox under Filter by permissions (optional). If you use double opt-in in Scratcher, people have confirmed their address before they are sent. See Set up double opt-in.
What is sent and when
New sign-ups are sent within a minute or two. When you activate the integration, the campaign's existing leads are sent too. When someone takes part again, their merge fields are updated.
Troubleshooting
Failed deliveries show under Settings > Integrations > Delivery status with Mailchimp's own message, for example:
- "Invalid Resource": a value doesn't fit the merge field, or a required merge field is missing. Check the mappings.
- "Member In Compliance State" or "Forgotten Email Not Subscribed": the person unsubscribed or asked to be deleted in Mailchimp. Mailchimp doesn't allow adding them again through an integration.
- The audience list is empty: the Mailchimp login you used can't see the audience. Connect again with an admin login.
